Essay ContestAddress the issue of your time and win prizes in the American Civil Liberties Union of Sonoma County's student essay contest.
Topic:
Since September 11, 2001, the government has taken certain steps in response to the attacks in New York City and at the Pentagon. Discuss whether these steps have violated or restricted our constitutional rights and to what extent, if any, it is appropriate for the government to violate or limit our constitutional rights in the fight against terrorism.Prizes:
First place: $100 cash
Second place: $50 gift certificate
Third place: $25 gift certificateRules:
Typed, double spaced, or neatly handwritten, on one side of standard white paper, not more than 1,250 words. Include your name, address, telephone number, name of high school, name of teacher, and current grade level. Contestants must be a Sonoma County resident enrolled in a Sonoma County high school. Students may ask teachers and parents for advice, but essay must represent original, student work. All sources should be properly acknowledged. Deadline: December 6, 2002. Winners will be announced in January. Prizes will be presented at the ACLU Awards Ceremony and Annual Dinner in early 2003. Copies of the first place essay and names of the winners will be distributed to all members of ACLU of Sonoma County and local media.
